Differences

December 1990

To Princess,

Differences between a man and a woman draw them together, and ironically, may tear them apart.

A man seeks from a woman tenderness and empathy, someone with whom to communicate with on a deeper level.

He seeks a complement, someone with whom to share his accomplishments and acknowledge his existence as an unique individual.

A woman seeks much the same thing; with the addition of, someone to provide direction for her and a secure future. True, most women are more than capable of providing for themselves, but they voluntarily submit to the direction of a man who is competent and caring.

And of course, both seek love that is physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually stimulating.

The type of love that only two people of the opposite sex can share.

Despite these reasons for drawing together, they are sometimes drawn apart -- no longer tolerating each one’s right to be a man or a woman. A man may, in time, tire of what he sees to be indecisiveness and emotional instability.

A woman may also tire of what she sees to be uncooperativeness and stubbornness. Sometimes each one’s concerns are legitimate, at other times simply misunderstandings.

Could it be the woman is simply seeking her husband’s leadership and support; rather than she being emotionally unstable and demanding?

Could it be the man is simply seeking time alone to sort things out and make plans for his family’s future; rather than being uncooperative and abandoning his family’s welfare?

The answer lies in each respecting the other’s differences.

The man should always, putting the truth first, make as his priority the caring for his family’s needs -- even though it may involve much self-sacrifice.

The woman should always, putting the truth first, support her husband and allow him time for making decisions -- even though he may seek solitude to think things out.

The man can never know what it is actually like to be a woman; and a woman can never know what it is actually like to be a man.

And why should either strive to be of the opposite gender? -- there is praise to be found in all of God’s creation.

When united, the man adds value to the woman, and the woman adds value to the man.

It is because of differences that a man and a woman will always have something unique and special to offer to each other.

Your close and special friend,

Papo
