French Language Learning Links

Did you know you can learn French for free using just online resources? I've created a French learning technique called French Swirl that lets you use a wide variety of free material available online. Just follow the simple steps below and you will be making good progress in learning the French language. Check out all the links below and choose your favorites for each SWIRL activity. I have highlighted some of my favorite links below with colors that match the Swirled letters here.
 

Study and Speak French-- Study is a broad term that encompasses many things; however, building vocabulary understanding the phonetic sounds of a language, and knowing how words combine together to make meaning is very important. and, of course, as our comprehension increases, we want to naturally speak the language daily at every opportunity.
Writing provides a mind body connection that fosters a greater intimacy with words, their spellings, and their meanings. Exercises, such as keeping a daily bi-lingual journal, copying definitions of words, or writing vocabulary in sentences will help to build this skill.
Immersing yourself in the French culture through such things as books, movies, radio, or tapes. Think about joining chats or clubs that are magnets for Francophiles trying to make French connections. Develop correspondence with French speaking people. And if you're ever favored with the opportunity, visit France!
Read French literature for understanding. If possible, print out, (approximately 4 to 500 words), a 3 minute reading of double spaced or nearly double spaced text. Make it your objective to dissect the meaning of each word, writing the translation above each word. It is best to have the text read to you as you follow allow and then write translations afterwards. Keep the text in a loose leaf binder and return to the same text daily until you've mastered at least 80% of the text. Print out another sheet of text and repeat the above.  Take time to read for fun, preferably with audio, as this will build your familiarity with words.
Listen to the French language. Listen to radio, dialogue, poetry, music, drama, culture. Listen a lot and then some more. You will naturally become more familiar with the language as your ears and your mind begin to differentiate sounds and then individual words and the ideas themselves.

Be realistic and do not expect over night results. You are learning a whole LANGUAGE, culture, and being that took centuries to develop and is, in fact, still growing and changing. Enjoy the journey and you will learn that much faster!
